Mindful Words

Has your mom ever told you communication is very important? I know my mother has told me endless amounts of times. I go on to tell her I know, and I do understand it is very important. But no matter how many times she reminds me during our conversations there will be situations I have to catch myself or I witness from other people around me that we could all learn to rephrase conversations. Especially in my line of work, you may not even notice the tone you use when you speak to people or the words you use. Everyone interprets things differently and at different times so when you have someone not yelling but speaking loudly towards you and their choice of words seem harsh they could mean something differently. We must remember that.

There are a few things I try to do best when I speak to people. The first thing I tend to be careful about is my tone of voice. I feel this one is one of the biggest things people and I, myself have the most problems with. I will be doing so many things in one moment I firmly speak not intentionally meaning to be harsh but is how some receive my words. And it is hard to know if they took your words in the manner.

Another thing I am cautious about is how loud I am and what I actually say to customers and peers. I say things pretty bluntly while I am at work not because I am barking orders but to not sugar coat anything or be accused of being extra nice and letting them slide with things that aren’t a big issue but still should be done a particular way. It is important that my diction and verbal communication face to face is done with good firm manners because of what I do.

I had a situation with a customer one day report a peer of mine because of the way they were spoken to and I have to say they were not a hundred percent correct or incorrect. There is so much interaction going on around us in our lives everyday that it can become overwhelming and frustrating. What do we do about it? We handle it, we fix anything that needs to be fixed or find someone that can fix it if you do not know how.

Next time there is something you may need assistants with be aware of how and what you relay to another person. No one fully knows what is going on in every single persons life. You could make or break a person’s day.

P.S. never forget to smile.
